1959 Dodge dressed for Xmas

This Roger Irland wrote in our guestbook:

It looks like you own the first station wagon my family owned-a '59 Dodge Sierra in black with a black and red interior. My dad bought it new in January of '60. I have memories of many miles riding in the spectator third seat. I have restored a '59 Sierra in Charcoal and Rose Quartz two-tone. She's supposed to be a photo feature in an upcoming issue of Collectible Automobile. My mom's family came from Ekolsund--family name Corell and a cousin of hers still lives north of Goteborg. Happy Moparing; Roger

My car is a Sierra Spectator.  The Sierra is the Coronet trim level and the Spectator denotes the three seat or nine-passenger model.  She's powered by a 361 cid Red Ram with 2bbl carb and Torqueflite.  Power steering, power brakes, AM radio, dual mirrors, hood ornament, and Mirror-matic are the common options, but not so common is the dual air conditioning first offered in 1959.

As far as story, the first wagon my family owned was a '59 Dodge Sierra in black with the black/red interior.  We drove on a camping vacation in July of 1960 from Chicago to California--with no a/c!I'd always liked the styling of the '59's and found this one at Hidden Valley Auto Parts about 30 miles south of Phoenix.  It was straight, restorable and complete less the two mirrors and the hood ornament.  It had been in the yard for a year, had lived not far away, and I knew it was only a matter of time before someone had to come along and take out the a/c for their coupe or convertible.  I'm very glad I was able to rescue the car and have driven her back and forth across the USA onseveral trips to car shows.  She was originally painted all pink (Rose Quartz.)  I two-toned her with Pewter Gray metallic to spice her up a bit.  I'd like to think I've helped to spark interest in old station wagons in the people who've seen her out and about.
